Commencement

I know we've had this before, but as I turn on the BTN and see pretty packed stadium, I thought about it again. My commencement speaker was pretty unexciting. Apparently, there is a tradition that when we have a new President of the University, that person is the commencement speaker. So my speaker was... James Duderstadt. I have no idea what he said.

Commencement will be televised on Fox2 and Ch4 locally. Fox coverage begins at 10am, Ch4 at 11am. So far I ahven't seen any TV listings for MSU's commencement next week.

The University announced today that the start time for the May 1 commencement ceremony was moved back one hour to 11 a.m. to provide additional time for participants to get through security checkpoints.

"We want students and their guests to have plenty of time to comfortably make it to campus and through security at the stadium, so that they can enjoy this historic event honoring the achievements of our 2010 graduates," [President Mary Sue] Coleman said.

The stadium gates will be open at 6 a.m. Graduates and their families and friends are encouraged to come early to allow adequate time to park, shuttle or walk to the stadium, and get through security. Specific information about where to park and enter the stadium, and what items are permissible, will be forthcoming.

Something for the seniors to look forward to. And I thought I had it made with Larry Page last year.

I'm finally graduating tomorrow, 18 years after I took my first class in Ann Arbor, Fall of 1991. Obviously, this is a pretty big deal, so we're doing the whole friends-and-family graduation party at the house afterwards. My wife has been taking cake decorating classes, and got good enough at it that she's now teaching the classes at a local Michaels. We got a sports arena bundt pan from her brother a year or so back, and figured this was the perfect time to break it out. After a test run last week to check the frosting colors and whatnot, she finished up the final product today. Some pictures: (Clicky on the pictures to go to larger versions on my Gallery site.)
