I normally don't post, but just read; today, though, I've heard something that will interest all of you if it turns out to be true. A friend of mine that goes to Rider High School (Beaver's H.S.) in Texas says that a local paper has declared that Beaver will probably "Fickle Finch" out of his commitment and either - get this - recommit to Michigan, or make home at Texas Tech.
This was a local paper of which the credibility I don't know, as I'm not familiar with anything in that area. However, I thought it was worth posting for argument's sake. For a little extra, the columnist in their paper said he believed 60% in Beaver's recommitment to Michigan, but that TTU is on the rise and is, to sum it all up, a "sexier" choice for Beav.
I'd categorize this with rumors right now, but seeing as it's in a local paper, I wasn't so sure it shouldn't be given some attention and some thought, at least.
My friend knows a couple of the football players on their high school team personally, but doesn't directly know Beaver, which is why I have doubts as to the accuracy of this info at this point. We'll see, though.
There are some really good diaries that people post on here and its nice to read peoples opinions from time to time but sometimes you just gotta say STOP IT!!!
As a 32 year old fan of Michigan athletics and an absolute nut over our fooseball program I have to say I was just as devastated as most of you were when we lost game after game in 08. But seriously folks some of you got to stop making these ridiculous assumptions. The most absurd is about Tate Forcier. Look I hope this kid ends up great. But he hasn't played a down yet & so many of you are talking like were going to win 9 games in the Big easy next year.
Great. If that happens what a grand suprise that would be, but the likely outcome is that Michigan fans need to be prepared for another season of heartbreaks. Not like 2008, but definitely nothing spectacular. I think a 7-5 0r 6 win season is what were looking at as a realistic ceiling and anything more is a gift.
I guess i'm just getting frustrated with all the blah blah blah. Its sounding absurd. Plus that kid doesn't need anymore pressure on him than he already has nor does any freshman coming in. Its like Terrell Pryor. The kid came in with so much hype people forgot he doesn't have an arm, AND he may never get one. He came to a good team that was ready to win and he handled it like a freshman with a wayyyy above average set of athletic skills. But he was still a freshman and they went 10-3. And that 10 wasn't that impressive. So Tates coming in to hopefully help a team that only won 3 games and so many of you are looking at him like the Messiah. This past season has too many of you trippin......
I missed this one, but happened to catch it on Dr. Saturday (whose text is below). It is bad enough USC stomps the Big Ten, do they have to eff up the coaching ranks as well? Carroll's $1M OC, Sarkisian's $900k DC and now this with Kiffin at UT? $400k for an OLB coach? Isn't that more than we will pay our new DC?
"Clearly, though, UT is committed to fortifying that limb, as its final push to fill out Kiffin's coaching staff proved late last week. Consider that at the start of last season, the most expensive assistant coach in the country was Florida State's offensive coordinator/coach-in-waiting Jimbo Fisher, at a base salary of $600,000. Tennessee not only nearly doubled that for Kiffin's grizzled dad, Monte, to come on as defensive coordinator (he'll make a little more than $1 million), but also topped it for Ed Orgeron's noted recruiting prowess (Coach O will bring in $650,000 as recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach). Last week, they went for broke to lure Alabama's ace recruiter, Lance Thompson, for $400,000 -- as an outside linebackers coach who'll play second fiddle to Orgeron on the recruiting trail. That's well over $2 million for three assistants, more than most schools -- even SEC schools -- allocate for their entire staff of assistants."
With cornerback as a big concern, and only a few weeks left in this class, the Wolverines start to look to the juniors for help. Lo Wood was just offered by Michigan, and we will hear from him soon. Another name that we will start to hear from is Penn Hills Cullen Christian. He's 6'1 180 pounds, and already has an offer from U of M. Christian is teammates with LB Dan Mason from this years class, and junior WR Brandon Ifill, who is also a Michigan prospect. Here's one of his highlight videos, and what he had to say about his recruitment.
TOM: You were just at the Junior Combine, how did that go?
CULLEN: It was good, a good experience. I did pretty good. The goal was just to do the best I could do in the 1 on 1’s, since it’s the wide receivers advantage. My name was on the list for good performers, so I feel like I did well.
TOM: Did you meet any other recruits that you’ll keep in touch with?
CULLEN: I met so many people, too many to name. It was good to meet a lot of the other recruits.
TOM: You’re teammates with Brandon Ifill and Dan Mason, has Dan’s recruitment helped you guys at all?
CULLEN: Yea he definitely showed us a couple things. There’s a lot of coaches that talk to Dan, and he has put in good words for us.
TOM: What schools do you think Dan Mason likes right now?
CULLEN: Top schools are WVU, Penn State, BC, and Pitt.
TOM: Will you and Brandon be a package deal, or are you looking at different schools?
CULLEN: We’re not going out of our way to go to same, but if something happens it happens. Most of the schools are looking at both of us.
TOM: Do you have any favorites to start, I know they usually change, but who sticks out right now?
CULLEN: Michigan, Pitt, Maryland. I was just offered by Maryland, so those are all my offers too.
TOM: Is there somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit? Or any schools you know you’ll definitely visit for a game?
CULLEN: There’s not really a school I’ve always wanted to visit; growing up I always liked Michigan. I was supposed to go on the 15th, but there’s a track meet so I’m going to reschedule. I really like them.
TOM: What camps do you plan on going to, or have you been to?
CULLEN: Scouts camp, Penn State, Adidas. I’m not sure about team camps yet.
TOM: How do you see your recruitment going? A lot of guys commit real quick, and some take their time, what will you do?
CULLEN: I’m going to take my time; I’m going to take all 5 visits. I don’t want to go through any decommits or anything, when I commit there will be no second guessing.
TOM: What are you looking for in a school? Do you look at early playing time, coaches, tradition?
CULLEN: I want early playing time, a school that has good tradition, the academics. That’s basically what I want to go to college for. The most important are playing time and academics. I don’t want to have to wait all the way to senior year.
TOM: Describe what kind of player you are, and what you bring to a college team.
CULLEN: I’m a real physical corner, I can watch bigger receivers, I won’t get out jumped, and I won’t get out ran. I can run with the quick ones and tackle the big ones. Especially if I went to Michigan, you need to know how to tackle in the Big Ten.
I have no idea if Greg Robinson is a serious candidate for the DC job, but some people seem to take him as one. Many claim that "his resume as a DC is excellent" and point out that "just because he wasn't a good HC, doesn't mean he won't be a good DC". Lets look at those two claims
First, his resume (omitting time as an OC previously):
1 Year with the Jets. Defense ranked 14th in PPG.
6 Years in Denver w/ defenses ranked 17th, 7th, 6th, 6th, 11th, 23rd
3 Years in Kansas City, when their defense was the laughing stock of the NFL - ranked 23rd, 28th, 20th, and he was fired.
1 Year at University of Texas, where he posted decent numbers (28th ranked defense nationally) against a weak schedule (they played 2 teams that finished the season ranked).
While Robinson did win 2 Super Bowls in Denver, his overall resume is what I would refer to as "checkered", and at no point has he coached a defense that could be referred to as "elite".
Second, while the DC job and HC job require different skill-sets, there are some commonalities - like recruiting. He's demonstrated no ability to recruit at Syracuse (which, for the most part, never fared any worse than the rest of the Big East), and has begun to lose 2-star recruits to FCS schools.
Finally, I don't think we should completely throw out his tenure as a head coach, as it was an epic disaster. Syracuse had 13 non-losing seasons in 14 years before his arrival, and had gone to 12 bowls in that time, including the BCS. Upon his arrival, Robinson turned a 6-6 team that returned 17 players into a 1-11 team. In the next 3 years he would reach a high-water mark of 4-8.
This just isn't a "strong" resume. The peak of his career occurred 10 years ago, and it wasn't that staggering of a peak. Since that time, he has been associated with 2 staggering failures (the KC defense, and Syracuse). I know nothing of his X's and O's, and would be unqualified to comment on them, but this guy doesn't seem like "The" guy.
I know there has been some talk about the spring game so far. I would just like to see what if anything has been planned with some of us fans? The last time I was at a spring game in 2002 there wasnt very many fans there and it was "ok". I know the weather can be bad in early April but I want to start turning UM's spring game into events like they are at other schools. Not only would it be alot more fun for us but think about how pumped the players, recruits and coaches would be seeing all of us and having a great time!
I know me and my buckeye fan girlfriend(dont worry she's cool) will be there and I WILL be tailgating before and after the game. So please come and all of you are more than welcome to come and hang out(drinking, playing games and music) with us as I show my love for the maize and blue!!! If anyone else is planning on tailgating or whatever we all should try and get together to have one giant party and have a great time doing what we all love, talking Michigan football! If anyone has any ideas on how to make the day better I'm open for anything. I dont know my way around Ann Arbor that great but we plan on heading downtown that night for some great food and drinks.
I hope to see all of you there to help show my girl how Michigan does it! She is looking forward to her first trip to the Big House and even though she's a buckeye I know with our fans she will love it! GO BLUE!!!!
