national champs baby
Whaaa?
So, this article from Philly.com has an unusual little passage:
When asked whether any of his phone exchanges so far with head coaches had been memorable, Slocum laughed and said, "Yeah, with the guy from Michigan [Lloyd Carr].''
How so?
"He was so excited. Just about screaming,'' Slocum said. "I couldn't hear for a couple of days. He gave me a good vibe, though.''
Update: also, this:
Fluck said the players were neither overwhelmed nor star-struck. He was floored that the young athletes did not recognize Bo Schembechler when the legendary former Michigan coach entered the room.
"They actually asked me who he was," Fluck said with a laugh. "I had to give them a whole lesson."
Crawford NOT to MSU?
Straight from the Emperor-God-King of East Lansing. Reportedly UK will not release his LOI. I'd expect Crawford to wait until the year's over and then transfer somewhere, still possibly to State.
Seriously interesting McKinney article
So, this is a little old (Dec. 18th) but I hadn't seen it before. It's basically a McKinney recruiting story from a guy who runs one of the OSU sites, but it has an absolute ton of quotes from the guy.
Here's this one, in reference to his finals-week official visit:
"Any city in any college campus would be kind of dull during finals week. I
don't think nothing of it. Kids are studying, everyone's got to study," he said.
"I ain't no big partyer myself anyway, but it was just boring. It was a boring
place to be I ain't going to lie. Everybody's studying and I'm on a visit and
I'm a recruit and I ain't doing no work or nothing, I'm going to be bored too.
Everybody is busy. It was boring, I ain't going to lie."
Stuff I didn't know but do now: Grant Mason is his cousin, schools compare him to Trevor Pryce, and, uh, one of his favorite D-line coaches... Greg Mattison(!). Worth readin'.
Nickname announcement
Henceforth, this site will refer to Zoltan Mesko as "Zoltan the Inconcievable, " or ZTI for short.
That is all.
You're harshing my buzz man
Zirbel's UK flirtation ain't done. ($)
Ok, ok, losing a committed basketball recruit is one thing, losing a football recruit to their sad-sack, completely and entirely hopeless for all time football program would be ridiculous. If this was Miami still pursuing, I would be wary. But this is still reading very low on my worry meter.
Update: I mean, freakin' seriously. Look at the depth chart. Stenavich is gone after this year and then it's basically him versus a guy who will be a fifth year senior and the two other tackles in his class, both of whom are sleepers. Unless something very wrong happens, Zirbel has the inside track to start at left tackle for three or even four years. At Michigan. With the winged helmets and all that business. And, you know, bowl games.
Cribbed Germany linkfest
This WH post basically does the linkfestin' for me.
M boards are also aflutter about the possibility of picking up both McKinney and Slocum, which would be the bombiest. That's an entire defensive line of top-100 recruits!
I was trying really hard to be cynical this offseason, seriously, but this recruiting class is making it very hard. Must... fight... hope...
